Check youtube for a solo with piano performance at the fashion awards to see the ironic nature of this song.Bowie and many others, Lennon, Dylan and Paul Simon use this style.Jumped off two stops into the ride and more or less loped back to the house up on Southend Road.I can't quite reconcile all the various references cited in the lyrics, but the repetition of the mouse theme is interesting: mousy hair, Mickey Mouse, the mice and their million hordes.I've always thought it referred to the fact that to Sam Tyler living in 1973 was like living on Mars to someone from 2006.Even though the same movie was written 10 times or more, we get a temporary life from the dreary rat race of modern life as soon as the images fill the screen. It was filmed backstage at Earls Court in London in 1973.Watch the film Factory Girl with Sienna Miller and it will become clearer. ?I had the black and white segments, and when I came across that very last bit after the music stopped, I thought it was a little gift, so I made it into an epilogue. The scenes really add a new flavor for it.Rock tells The Guardian of the ?Life on Mars?? edit.I?m really happy with it, and I?m interested to see what the fans make of it.People like the original video, but I think this version takes it to another level.MTV and all related titles and logos are trademarks of Viacom International Inc by David Bowie.

The bridge from verse to chorus strengthens this idea. The song was released on Bowie's Hunky Dory album in December, 1971 and later as a UK single in June, 1973 and was a major hit for the rock legend.Bowie is painting a picture of a media landscape so out of touch with real life that the girl can no longer relate to what she sees on screen. She has been alienated from her family, her friends, and now, through the lens of media, the rest of the world but she, ultimately, conforms to what she sees on screen. This leads us to the chorus where the strongest case for surreal lyrics can be made but, taking it at face value, it's just a laundry list of images that the girl is being fed.Taken at this value, the song isn't surreal at all and is just simple concept, told with simple words, over a beautiful melody. He is a musician and an avid baseball fan.Is Bowie, in this final passage, singing from the perspective of the girl he sang about in the earlier passages. The girl knows what seat has the clearest view and totally immerses herself into the picture show.
